A Roadmap For Your Breakup

Going through a breakup can sometimes feel like being in an ocean abyss- mood swings, intense sadness, anger, anxiety and despair. One book that I’ve recommended over and over through the years is Susan Piver’s The Wisdom of a Broken Heart. What I love about this book is that it gives some structure to what can feel like an out of control experience.

Piver’s writing is both comforting and relatable. The book contains personal anecdotes, meditation instruction and other exercises to help process, and eventually release, the feelings of attachment towards the relationship.

While coming into therapy and leaning on friends are also part of the process, I think it’s helpful to have something to turn to in those lonely moments on the train or late at night when feelings of sadness and anxiety can take hold.

Piver’s book culminates in a seven day program that helps you to embrace the openness made possible by the breakup and to turn towards your feelings, rather than trying to escape them. You’ll also be left with the tools to continue a personal meditation practice, useful for navigating both new relationships, as well as the everyday challenges of modern life.
